

From the 15th until late 19th centuries, it experienced the same invasions and colonial rule as its East African neighbors. It was a part of German East Africa from the 1880s until 1919, when after World War I Germany was forced by the League of Nations to cede control to the British. The British ruled the nation then known as Tanganyika until 1961, when independence was achieved.
In 1964 Tanganyika formed a union with the offshore Zanzibar islands and renamed itself Tanzania. Today Tanzania is a unitary republic and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
Note: The Rock band from 80s, Queen’s legendary lead singer, Freddie Mercury, i.e. Farrokh Bulsara, a Parsi Indian, was born in Zanzibar.
Language: Kiswahili and English are the official
languages; scores of tribal languages also are spoken.
